“My art is a record of my Palestinian identity and every viewer is part of my achievement.” - Samar Hussaini, 2017

Born in the United States to exiled Palestinian parents Hussaini visualizes layered challenges and enriching distinctions of being a Palestinian-American and strives to create thought-provoking ideas of dialogue and hope. She tells the story of Palestinian culture in a positive light transforming the narrative portrayed during this turbulent time. Her work reveals the story of Palestinian people in a humanizing way and depicts the many layers of rich cultural icons that create a strong identity.

Hussaini uses elements such as traditional embroidered Palestinian cross stitch indicating regional identity; Palestinian icons such as the Keffiyeh (head scarf) and the hand stitched Thobe (dress) that all relate to her heritage; and the writings of her father Dr. Hatem Hussaini from over 25 years ago that speaks to the continuing plight of the Palestinian people.

Mixed media elements such as paper, charcoal, pencil, metal leaf and acrylic paint on canvas, reveal intense personal experiences luring the viewer in to uncover the depths of an intricate and multi-challenged reality. Hussaini’s works isolate movement and emotions -- vitalizing new sequences and illuminating an inseparable relationship between layers.
